Challenging Format Produces Results

Two hundred managers from the North-East hospitality sector have just completed a challenging 14-week management development programme funded by the European Social Fund (ESF).

The Learning and Skills Council (LSC) chose leading hospitality trainers Brenikov Associates to take them through the British Institute of Innkeeping Management Diploma in Licensed Hospitality.

Thirty five Ultimate Leisure managers are among the 200 candidates to undertake this free course at Brenikov's Jesmond Training Centre where new approaches to management development are introduced to the hospitality arena.

Networking with fellow professionals in the industry is an added bonus with ideas and trends being shared.

"The programme provides a totally new perspective on hospitality management training," said managing director, Marjorie Brenikov.

"We have complemented our own hospitality expertise with Weightman Associates, the North's leading provider of management and HR skills. This has provided a breadth and depth of knowledge not previously experienced in the hospitality sector.

"Candidates have welcomed the opportunity to learn from other sectors in this challenging format.

"Until now there has been a distinct lack of management development opportunities for hospitality. The success of this programme is demonstrated in the benefits to participating businesses which have been more outstanding than we could ever have hoped for.

"Greatly improved gross profit is top of the list closely followed by staff motivation and retention."

Pauline Frankland, contracts manager at LSC added: "Brenikov Associates is one of the most successful training providers in hospitality with an unrivalled reputation within the trade for delivering quality training programmes as well as an examination pass rate which is second to none.

"I am pleased with the way the initiative has started and have full confidence that their team will continue to successfully deliver the training programme to ensure that this unique opportunity will improve business performance in the hospitality sector."

Brenikov's portfolio of hospitality qualifications maintains its profile at the forefront of hospitality management development.

Since the introduction of the Licensing Act 2003 more than 1,100 candidates have achieved the National Certificate for Personal Licence Holders with the company.

Brenikov's has taken this a stage further by delivering the first Designated Premises Supervisors qualification in the region. Licensing Police and Local Authority representatives who attended the event welcomed the guidance and support this qualification provides for managers of hospitality businesses to ensure compliance with a variety of legislation as well as implementation of best practice.

Equal opportunities are at the forefront of all training with Brenikov's. Working with police and the Asian business community and benefiting from additional support funding from Tyne Metropolitan College, licensing courses are offered free to candidates to whom English is an additional language.

Manjit Cheema, Chairman of the Asian Business Association in the North-East, is actively supporting this initiative and provides translation in Bengali, Urdu, Hindi and Punjabi throughout the programme. Manjit said: "It is essential that our community takes advantage of this opportunity as the new Licensing Act is totally different from the old regime."

Brenikov's portfolio of courses also extends to the all important and growing food side of hospitality.

Again it has scored a first in the industry, this time delivering the new CIEH Award in Implementing Food Safety Management Procedures to support food managers in their new responsibilities under the 2006 Food Hygiene Regulations.

Marjorie Brenikov explained: "It is essential that operators stay ahead of the game in this thriving and vibrant industry. It is our aim to ensure that we provide the training initiatives to support this growth."
