About the Course

Who should attend this course?

This qualification is aimed at learners who wish to become emergency first-aiders in the workplace.

The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 state that employers should provide adequate and appropriate equipment and enough trained first aiders to help injured or ill staff.

The regulations only cover first aid arrangements for employees, but businesses that deal with members of the public should also consider this in their needs assessment.

What does the course involve?

This is a very practical one day course during which candidates will learn all they need to know to successfully complete the assessment at the end of the day.

 Course overview:

  • Assessing the casualty and situation and undertaking the appropriate action.
  • The unconscious casualty and utilising the recovery position.
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) – performing artificial ventilation and chest compressions.
  • Head injuries.
  • Asthma, choking and clearing an obstructed airway.
  • Severe bleeding – how to control severe bleeding.
  • Shock – how to recognise and treat shock.
  • The first aid kit and accident reporting procedures.
  • Heart attack, seizures and diabetes – how to recognise and treat illnesses.
  • Burns and scalds – how to treat burns and scalds.
  • Fractures – how to recognise and treat fractures.

How is the course assessed?

Candidates take a practical assessment at the end of the day. On successful completion of this course candidates achieve Highfield Awarding Body Certification.

“I enjoyed having a wonderful assessor. Really looked forward to our meetings. Jacqui brought out of me the knowledge I knew but had hidden, extremely easy to talk to and very understanding of how uneasy I felt at times. 20/10”

Ann Robinson - Advanced Apprenticeship in Hospitality & Leadership

“I have found the apprenticeship really successful thanks to Nick Hopper my assessor. I have been at Cosentino’s Cafe Bar for over a year now and have learnt so much and think I have improved a lot since day one. When Nick comes into assess me he is really supportive and easy to get on with and makes the work and questions more understandable for me to answer. I am really pleased with what I have achieved and learnt this year thanks to Brenikov.”

Charlotte Nicole Pill - Intermediate Apprenticeship in Food & Beverage Service

“I feel the support I have been given throughout my apprenticeship from Graham has been really good and he has been in touch a lot if I needed help”

Danielle Downing - Advanced Apprenticeship in Hospitality & Leadership

“Throughout my course I feel I have been given lots of support from my work colleagues and also Graham”

Dionne Hood - Intermediate Apprenticeship in Food Production & Cooking

“I have found the training most beneficial to my job and have had all the help to my job and have had all the help and support i have needed throughout. Graham has been more than helpful and contactable any time. Have thoroughly enjoyed the course and I am looking forward to going on to do the level 3 programme.”

Gale Woolrych - Intermediate Apprenticeship in Food Production & Cooking

“I applied for a job working for Newcastle city learning teaching adults cake decorating. I have been offered the job and they are going to send me on the PTLLS course that they run at the Westgate Community College. I would like to thank you all at Brenikov as I feel that attending the NVQ courses gave me the confidence to apply for the job and not be scared when the word training is mentioned”

Heather Mclaren - Advanced Apprenticeship in Hospitality & Leadership.

I have really enjoyed this course. The training and support given by Graham has been excellent. I feel I have learned lots to help with my job role

Jenny Green - Advanced Apprenticeship in Hospitality & Leadership

Going to be honest here but this apprenticeship has been the best thing I have ever done, going from applying for jobs and getting nothing, but then going into an apprenticeship and coming out with so much. I have my personal license which I got through my pre-apprenticeship course, I have peoples comments about me on trip advisor, an article in the journal paper which says I am “the most extensive and ambitious waiter I have ever been served by”. Now to have someone say that about you is just absolutely brilliant. However I wasn’t always good at what I do, on my first shift my boss said could you carry some wine and well I’m rather clumsy but said yeah, took two steps and covered myself in wine and dropped the whole tray, but now I can carry loads of wine on my hand and not spill any off it. All the way through my apprenticeship I have had Nick Hopper as my assessor and I must say that man is a star, he has been with me from the start helping me through things and guiding me through my Apprenticeship which I have thoroughly enjoyed

Luke Sweeney - Intermediate Apprenticeship in Food & Beverage Service

“I have enjoyed learning my Intermediate Apprenticeship in Food Production & Cooking course and Graham Smith has been a big help getting me through my course. Nothing has been too much of a problem to him”

Stanley Green - Intermediate Apprenticeship in Food Production & Cooking
